Death Squad

7th St. Entry

March 1990 – New Band night.

This was version 2 of Death Squad. They picked up a new singer. The older brother to Impulse Manslaughter’s singer. A new voice. Better songs. Even their first professionally recorded set of songs, and a 7″ ep.

Cut The Meat.

One day Meaty Bob Johnson decided to quit Impaler, and teamed up with Gary from Death Squad and recorded this demo tape.

I shot this crappy video…honestly, I never really finished it. But here it is.

A year later, Cut the Meat became a real band. A female guitarist whose name escapes me. Meaty Bob on Bass. Petey from Willful Neglect. Terry from Vile. Even later, the band would morph into Mondo Trasho.

Death Squad at the East Side Armory in St. Paul

February 13 1988

Oakdale thrash metal outfit. They played an SOD, DRI style of thrash. This early version features the original singer Bubba. They put out 3 demo tapes with this lineup. They would later change singers and put out a 7″ and a professionally produced cassette album on Sub-Mission Records.

Born to Lose…Die to Win? cassette LP

Death Squad started thrashing up Oakdale keggers in the 80’s.  In the 90’s they changed singers (opting for the older brother to Impulse Manslaughter’s singer) and put out a 7" EP that I’ll post later.  What do a bunch of crossover metal/punk kids know about vinyl records?  No one at the keg parties wanted records…they wanted tapes.   So the next release brought them back to the cassette tape (which by the time it was released, everyone wanted CD’s – you can’t win!).   14 songs of thrashing hardcore in the style of D.R.I.

The Bubba Years

The Bubba years is a compilation of Death Squad’s first 4 demo tapes and a few tracks from a cable access video I shot of the band from 1986-1990.  This was compiled and mastered July 10-11, 1998 from 10 year old demo tapes and the cassette master of "Casting…" (Which I released for the band).

The Death Squad guys are long time friends of mine.  I released everything they did from 1990 until the band broke up.  I also put up their MySpace page.

First Demo, 1986

  • Tracks 1-5

Second Demo, 1987

  • Tracks 6-16

Reach Out And Kill Someone, 1988

  • Tracks 17-21

Casting A New Light On Corn, 1990

  • Tracks 22-29

Cable Access Video, 1989 or 1990

  • Tracks 30-33

Johnny Strad posted a rip of one of the demos over on the lockjaw blog, but these rips are about as good as it will get and pretty all-inclusive.  CD artwork is included.  What are you waiting for?

More early demos

More stuff from 1987/1988 era Death Squad with the original singer.  The blog posting incorrectly lists them as from Michigan.

2 Demos

I’ve known these guys forever.  In fact I put out a few of their records/tapes for them.   Great guys, great band. Defiantly not politically correct.   Crossover style metal/punk in the D.R.I. style.  These two tapes from 1986/1987feature the original singer Bubba, who died a few years back.

“Memo to the P.M.R.C.”
Death Squad – St. Paul, MN crossover metal band from the 1980’s.
Location: 7th St. Entry, Minneapolis, MN
Death Squad were friends of mine. I put out their 7″ EP, and a few cassettes for them. You can hear some of their stuff on the Myspace page I made for them. I’ll post some of the music in another posting. Sorry the video is so small. It’s one of the original videos posted on BasementShows.com, back in the early 90’s dial-up days.
