Vile

Demo
Vile was Minneapolis’ metal version of the Mentors.  Pure porn-metal.  Fast, hard and explicit.  As far as I know, this was the only thing ever released by the band.
Vile was made up of former (and future) Impaler members Mike Senn & Gilligan.  When Vile broke up, Gilligan went on to become Miss Glenda in a funk-metal band called Mondo Trasho (which featured Meaty Bob from Impaler & Bradley J. from Idol Threat .

Impaler

Decay

If we had brains…we’d be dangerous

My personal favorite Minnesota metal band.  Impaler.  I first discovered these guys from my friends in Death Squad.  Impaler & Death Squad were both from the St. Paul area (like myself) and backyard keg party’s and metal just seem to go together….so it’s fitting that the first place I was Impaler play was in my friend Dave Benson’s garage.  Not your Slayer/Metallica speed metal, but more of a hard rock/metal with a whole lot of blood and guts thrown in.  They call it "Shock Rock" and I’d have to agree.  The influence of cheap b-movie horror flicks on these guys can not be overstated.

Impaler put out an EP on the pre-Combat Records label IRD.  Then the Combat full length LP (both later released  on a single CD).  They would continue right up to today releasing albums themselves of on smaller labels and with each passing year seem to add more and more gore to the stage shows.

So why am I posting metal here?  Because, thanks in large part to Impaler, metal & punk have always been to very complementry to each other.  In other cities you might have punks and metalheads fighting…not so here.  Impaler used to have punk bands open for them.  Their first full length album was produced by Bob Mould (and is highly saught after by die-hard Hüsker Dü fans).

Get the LP here .

Impaler’s Website & MySpace page

Some Early Demos were posted on the "True Punk & Metal " blog by former guitarist/roadie Johnny Stradinger that are well worth downloading.  Head over and get the LP, and read all the comments posted.  I re-posted it here, because it’s easy to miss in the comments section:

stradinger said…

I left the comment before about us still being around, but felt the need to say more.. I was a roadie from day one and guitarist on Wake Up Screaming.. Impaler was influenced by old school punk and metal, glam rock, pro wrestling and horror movies. Lead singer Bill Lindsey tried to incorporate all of these into his music. We got lumped in with all the other thrash metal bands, but had more in common with the punks than with the headbangers. But then again, stuck in the middle , we were either fags or posers…
Anyway, Bill is still around playing.
Here is a post I left at guitars 101, if anyone wants some demos and a live show from way back, this is the 1st 2 demos and a rare live show from 1983. At this time the band had Mike Senn as 2nd guitarist, it contains unreleased and early versions of songs that would later be on Rise of the Mutants, If We Had Brains, and Wake Up Screaming. This is the best versions you will get. I was the only one from the band who kept copies of the early stuff.

Disembodied

Early 7"s and Broz Keep split

If God Only Knew The Rest Were Dead (1996)

Diablerie (1997)

Heretic (1999)

Here’s another band I know nothing about.  I was searching to see if anyone had posted the "No Slow…All Go!" compilation, when I came across this blog posting of just about everything Disembodied had released.  Naturally, it was missing the compilation I was looking for.

Read through the comments on the blog post and you’ll see that someone is talking about rereleasing some of this stuff on CD.  From the Path to Misery blog site.

The vinyl can be found here .

Subversives

Tomorrow belongs to no one 12" EP (Vulture Rock 1996)

Who would have ever thought the term "Minnesota" and "Oi!" would ever be used in the same sentence?   Well the Subversives were a Minneapolis Oi! band featuring the one and only Ollie Stench on bass guitar.  I don’t know much about the rest of the guys in this band, other than I believe at some point they were stupid enough to kick Ollie out of the band.  Crazy.

Anyway, I found this baby on yet another blog site that posts in a language that I don’t read.  However, just like me, I’ll bet you understand the international language of rock and you’ll have no trouble finding the download link.

Magnolias

The Magnolias are one of my favorite “bar” bands to see. Locally under-rated on the punk scene probably because they are so popular at the bar shows. Always a good show no matter what. I’ve been catching their shows since before the first Twin/Tone record came out. An ever revolving lineup, with the one constant of John Freeman, the music is consistent yet evolving with every record.

Impetus Inter

Impetus Inter – Havana
The Whole Music Club
Minneapolis, MN
6/3/95

Watch it Here

This is another band that used to shake the walls practicing at the THD House in Minneapolis.  Mark lived there, and was in this band at the same time he was in Destroy!.  Of course Erik was also in D4.  Dave Hake always struck me as a very quite, very nice guy.  Then he’d go down the basement and scream his lungs out.

From LastFM:

Impetus Inter were an emo /hardcore band, a ctive from 1994 to 1996.

History and Members:

Summer of 1994 – The West Coast Tour
“Classical” Impetus Inter:

  • Mark Newman – Guitar
  • Mark Wilcox – Guitar
  • Amanda Huron – Drums
  • Ian Rhoades – Bass
  • David Hake – Vocals
  • Valerie Taylor – Roadie and Artistic Consultant
  • Andy Upright – Roadie

The West Coast Tour culminated in the recording of both the “Youth Jihad” 7” (Bloodlink) and the Self-Titled 7” on Three Speed Records. During Impetus Inter’s stay in San “Don’t Care Much About Places” Diego. Punctuated with van breakdowns and back breaking financial losses, Impetus Inter became a vehicle of resolve rather than dismay enjoying consecutive shows with emo movers and shakers who were the best and finest of their day. Impetus Inter continued to push forward. Ian left for Ecuador, and the long line of bass players began.

Patrik Dousa, Tara Anderson, and Tim Canan played bass in this interim period.

February and Summer of 1995 – The Ten Day Tour and North American Tour
“Empire” Impetus Inter:

  • Mark Newman – Guitar
  • Mark Wilcox – Guitar
  • Amanda Huron – Drums
  • Eric Funk – Bass
  • David Hake – Vocals
  • Valerie Taylor – Roadie

The fabled Ten Day Tour with Cerebellum label-mates Dillinger Four covered the Midwest interior, crystallized the “Candy Bars Are Easy” concept (petty theft is to be encouraged), and moved the ground for our grand constituency, with a great initial send off from the fabled Detroit Festival of 1995.
