Demo #2

A while back I posted Vile’s first demo, and I said at the time that it was the only demo that I knew of….I now know, thanks to Strad over at Lockjaw, that there was a second Vile demo.  If you know me, you know I loved these guys.  Metal’s version of the mentors.    Bonus here is the first track, Sex Fix, ended up funkified by Mondo Trasho which featured two members of Vile, one member of Impaler, and one member of Idol Threat.  Fuck ya!

Bad Trip EP

What can I say about this record?  Bad Trip! C’mon.  It was Treehouse Records #1, so that makes it instant collectors scum material.  The singer, John, is the nicest guy you’ll ever meet.  Years after the band broke up, he bought the Roadrunner Records store in south Minneapolis at 43rd & Nicolett, and continues to run it to this day.  One of the last indie record shops left in the Twin Cities.  None of that is why you need to grab this though….

This is classic Minneapolis punk from back in the day.  "Never had it better" is the stand out track for me, but hell, there is only 3 songs here and they are all great!  You need this.

Outcry 12" EP (Positive Force)

Another Shot for Braken comp (Positive Force)

Buffalo EP (Red Decibel)

Outcry were hands down the best straight edge band to come out of Minnesota.  It’s too bad that the recordings that would document their career would be only 12 songs.  They released one 7  song EP on Positive Force (7 Seconds’ label), one track on a compilation LP from the same sessions and for the same label, and about 10 years after they broke up, a 4 song 7" EP.  That’s it, and that is a shame.

I saw Outcry play several times in their short existence.  Most notably was opening for 7 Seconds at McCready’s pub in downtown Minneapolis.  It was that show that set them up for the Positive Force releases.  All of this stuff is just about impossible to find these days (but I think I still have a few sealed copied of the 12" EP in my basement somewhere) so grab it now while you can!

Here’s a good blog read about the 12" EP.

Death Squad

Born to Lose…Die to Win? cassette LP

Death Squad started thrashing up Oakdale keggers in the 80’s.  In the 90’s they changed singers (opting for the older brother to Impulse Manslaughter’s singer) and put out a 7" EP that I’ll post later.  What do a bunch of crossover metal/punk kids know about vinyl records?  No one at the keg parties wanted records…they wanted tapes.   So the next release brought them back to the cassette tape (which by the time it was released, everyone wanted CD’s – you can’t win!).   14 songs of thrashing hardcore in the style of D.R.I.

Marble

Spinning Around 1997

Do you like Black Flag or ALL’s instrumental songs?  If so, than this is right up your alley.   Marble were a pop punk band in the 1990’s Descendents/ALL style.  This album does feature a singer on it, but my memory says that he left right after this was recorded or something, because I only remember seeing them as an instrumental band.  Oh, and if you think that all Minnesota punk comes from the Twin Cities, you’d be wrong.  I think these guys were from the Mankato area.

Search the interwebs for Marble and you’ll likely find nothing….that’s a shame because this record is a pop punk classic.

They also released a split 7" EP with the Porcelain Boys.

Hero demo tape

I really don’t know anything about these guys.   Three piece grunge type band.  Very heavy 90’s rock kinda stuff.

Living in Tandem EP

Minnesota punk from 1982 by Ground Zero.  Probably known to most passers by for having a couple of records on Reflex (Husker Du’s homebrew record label).   One of these guys went on to be in the straight-edge hardcore band, Outcry.

Year: 1982
Label: Bung
Format: 7″
Songs:

  • Controversy.mp3
  • T.V. Land.mp3
  • Living In Tandem.mp3

Crucify Me

This is by no means a great rip.  It’s about 47 generations (and mostly on cheap tapes)  off the crappy demo tape that they sold or gave away in 1985.  So why am I bothering to post it?  Because as I said earlier in the week, I think it’s the greatest punk rock demo tape in the history of punk rock demo tapes.

The comparison to Black Flag is easy, but it doesn’t do them justice.  This demo kicks more ass that anything your ever going to hear, so quit jerking around and download this baby right now!

The Waiting Game

Local hardcore outfit Bloodline fronted by former Blind Approach roadie, Bill Boulger.  I don’t speak French (I think that’s french on the blog anyway) but luckily the rock is purely Minnesotan.

Reach Out

One of the many blur of bands that played in our basement back in the day.  I think the blog post is funny pointing out Erik Funk smoking on the cover…apparently, they don’t know he owns a bar…the Triple Rock!

Does anyone else remember when Victory Records put out hardcore instead of the crap they put out today?  Wow.
