This was the 7" that started it all! Local kings of the drunk punx, these guys knew how play some classic style punk rock with a sense of humor. Great record. Great band. If you don’t own it, you need to!
I hear they still play an occasional show now and then.

Shot in 1996. A 5 piece here (I don’t ever remember a 2nd guitarist), with Frank on Bass.

Libido Boyz

"Beaten Man" (by Outcry)

In the early 80’s Outcry was my favorite HC band. I got to see them a few times, and they had that awesome record on Positive Force. Outside of that EP, and the “Another Shot for Braken” comp, that was about it for them in the 80’s. Long after they broke up, Red Decibel released “The Buffalo” EP, which was tracks from what I understand to be an unreleased album worth of material. Sadly, it wasn’t the same sXe HC. Anyway, Beaten Man is from that first EP, and covered by one of the best late 80’s early 90’s punk bands to come out of this state. The Libido lineup is also in the classic and far superior lineup that featured Dustin on Bass.

Suicide Commandos

Make a Record
What can I say about the band largely credited with starting the whole MN Punk scene? Released in 1978 on Blank Records, these guys were the godfathers of MN Punk. Just a short list of bands that were influenced by them: Husker Du, Replacements, & Soul Asylum. Um, those bands, and their contemporaries pretty much laid the groundwork for everyone else that followed.
The album has been re-released on CD by (I believe) Garage D’or Records . You need to buy it!
You can get a rip of the old vinyl here .

Blind Approach

Restless Nights

The first release by these St. Paul skinheads.  3 songs on black vinyl.   Hardcore with some serious asperations for metal.  I shot video of these guys back in 1989, just before they broke up in the 7th St. Entry.  You can see that video over at BasementShows.com .   Guitarist Matt Henderson went on to join Agnostic Front & Madball.

Bloodline

Can’t Rest on the Times

I don’t have much to say about Bloodline.  I was never into the whole skinhead hardcore stuff.  Bill was a really nice guy.  Original roadie for Blind Approach.  Founding member of Extreme Noise.  I think they played in our basement once or twice.

This would have been their 2nd record, put out by Nemesis Records

Disturbed

Disturbing the Peace

The late Earl Root was Minneapolis metal.  No one did more in this town to promote metal, than Earl did.  He was in bands, ran record labels, owned a record store, and had a late-night metal radio show on KFAI for more years than I can count.  Disturbed was one of Earl’s finest moments in my mind.  This record was a masterpiece of metal, long before another band came along and made it big with the same name.

There were some great videos that went along with this album.  They were shot in the same building that many of my early public access shows were shot.  If I ever stumble across them, I’ll post the too.  In the meantime, check out the album.  It’s well worth the download.

The Strike

A Conscience Left to Struggle With Pockets Full of Rust

Socialist mod-punks, The Strike started out as a 4 piece consisting of Macalaster College kids. They later slimmed to a trio and left the twin towns for Chi-Town where they continued to grow in popularity, but eventually broke up.

This is one of their later records after they moved to Chicago, but they’ll always be a MNPunk band.

(Sorry about the long break in posts)

Claustrophobia

Man Sized Action are one of my favorite 80’s MPLS bands. Claustrophobia is their first record, put out on Husker’s label Reflex Records.  This is really a great record and worth the time to download.  Also, take look for the link to Five Story Garage, their 2nd album which is also a gem!  Stolen from the "I have a brain in my ass" blog.

Cows

Cunning Stunts

Honestly, the cows always struck me as a bit to artsy.  I saw them a couple of time, and I own the first album, but it didn’t do much for me…couple of good songs…just not my cup of tea.  Maybe someone else has a better story to write about them.
