Awesome Snakes

this is one of my new favorite local bands right now.  Yet, I’ve never seen them, and have no idea if this is a serious thing or not.  Who cares.  I like the music!

SURPRISE YOUR FRIENDS!!
(Split with White Frogs)
2001

Perhaps one of St. Paul’s longest lasting unknown pop punk bands.  I can honestly say that I never saw Ferd Mert play.  I never heard their records.  And I just don’t know much about them at all.

I have heard the name a million times, and they used to advertise like crazy.  They seem to on a million comps.   Somehow, I still have no idea who they are.

Make this your introduction to them.  If you like them, they have a bunch of music available on iTunes, and CD Baby.

01 Easy Words (White Frogs)
02 Changes (White Frogs)
03 Summer Days (White Frogs)

04 Censorship (White Frogs)

05 What it Takes (White Frogs)
06 Doce de Leite (Ferd Mert)

07 Just do Something (Ferd Mert)

08 Dogface (Ferd Mert)

09 I Feel Like Shit (Ferd Mert)
10 Lori (Ferd Mert)

Shoot Your Way to Freedom EP

I remember seeing these at Garage D’or back in the day.  All the covers had bullet holes in them.  Hell yes!

The Last Days Of Pompeii

Long out of print LP from the former Husker Du drummer.  I can’t think of many folks with as bad of luck with record labels as Grant Hart.  Just about everything he has done post-Husker’s is out of print because the labels have folded, and The entire Husker Du catalog it tied up in a court battle between the band and SST.  Sucks.

Catch a Falling Star EP (1983)

Take It LP (1986)

Not really punk, but a Twin Cities mainstay from the era.  I know the LP was on TwinTone, but I don’t know much about the EP as this would be the first I’ve heard of it.  This website lists them as "Ska" but the only similarity to Ska with guys guys was that they had horns…..at least that’s my memory of them anyway.

Mighty Mofos

Mindreader EP

Hands down one of my favorite local bands.  Garage punk before most people knew what punk was.  This was from the poorly produced (muddy) Treehouse Records LP, with a bonus non-LP track.  Get it anyway because these guys know how to rock!

Combat Boot Camp

Despite what Warner Bros. claimed, this Boot Camp EP was Powermad’s first record.  Of course, you can’t blame Bugs Bunny from wanting to ignore it.  The production quality is poor, and the band has a much more raw sound than the polished WB release…..oh, and most of the songs on this EP were on the 2  WB records.

Anyway, I’m sad to call these guys MN’s most accomplished metal band, because there were so many better metal bands out there, but that seems to be what happened.
